Sharmeen Obaid’s sister harassed by a doctor, REALLY???

We have been hearing the hot news of Sharmeen Obaid Chinnoy’s sister “harassment”. At any stage, harassment should not be acceptable by any woman. It is the matter of integrity and self esteem of a woman.  But before proceeding to the actual topic, let’s first understand the definition of harassment.

According to Vocabulary.com, “If someone is abusing, insulting, or otherwise harming you on a regular basis, it’s called harassment.”

Now apply this definition on the latest “incident” of Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s sister harassment, in which she went to Agha Khan University Hospital and the doctor who treated her tried to add her on Facebook. Let’s apply the harassment definition on the “incident”.

• Was she abused by the doctor?
• Did the doctor insult her?
• Does the doctor harm her regularly?

The answer is “NO”. Thus it is proved that the doctor has not harassed her. However the situation says that Sharmeen Obaid Chinnoy, with all due respect, has defamed the doctor. Let’s look into the definition of ‘defamation”.

According to thefreedictionary.com, ‘Any intentional false communication, either written or spoken, that harms a person’s reputation; decreases the respect,regard, or confidence in which a person is held; or induces disparaging, hostile, or disagreeable opinions or feelings against a person.”

So the tweeter given by Sharmeen Obaid Chinnoy looks false (as per the definition of harassment), however it has harmed the reputation of doctor, it has decreased his respect and regard, and would must have hurt his confidence. By law, defamation is a criminal or civil charge. Thus my readers are wise enough to follow the right side.

It looks like Madam Chinnoy has misused “feminism”. I am a great fan of her because of her Oscar winning accomplishments, but that do not authorize her to ‘use’ feminism. The doctor might be a fan of Madam Chinnoy like me, if its fine for me adding her sister, then it should be ok for the male-doctor as well. The feminist school of thought believes in gender equality, but unfortunately some feminists do not miss a chance of using or misusing feminism. Also the doctor did not forced her to accept his friend’s request, she could have easily ignored it rather making “big issue” from nothing serious. Sharmeen Obaid Chinnoy and sister will move on now, but the doctor has lost both his job and his integrity.
