Does it Matter if Your Makeup is HALAL or NOT?
Well we know that it is necessary for the food we consume to be halal as it is mentioned in the Quran and the Hadith:
“They ask thee (O Muhammad) what is made lawful for them. Say: (all) good things are made lawful for you. And those beasts and birds of prey which ye have trained as hounds are trained, ye teach them that which Allah taught you; so eat of that which they catch for you and mention Allah’s name upon it, and observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is swift to take account” (5:4)
On the authority of Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
The Messenger of Allah said:
“Allah the Almighty is good and accepts only that which is good. Allah has commanded the Faithful to do that which He commanded the Messengers, and the Almighty has said: “O ye Messengers! Eat of the good things, and do right..” (Quran 23:51).
And Allah the Almighty has said:
“O ye who believe! Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you..” (2:172). Then he mentioned [the case of] a man who, having journeyed far, is disheveled and dusty and who spreads out his hands to the sky [saying]: O Lord! O Lord!-while his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing unlawful, and he is nourished unlawfully, so how can he be answered!” (Muslim).
But a lot of people of the Muslim Ummah are of the view that since makeup products are not meant to be eaten, there is no need to be careful as to whether they are haram or halal.
I believe that this belief is valid only to a certain extent because moisturisers are absorbed by the skin and lipsticks often enter the digestive system, intentionally or unintentionally by the licking of the lips.
Although it is a serious matter and needs to be looked into, most of us usually don’t bother about it due to careless attitude or unawareness.
Another reason for not checking makeup is that when one thinks of doing so, the very thought of the long process and effort destroys his enthusiasm…
But believe me, it is not that hard, thanks to the modern technology….All you have to do is email the company, which manufactures the product or simply ask the salesgirl who is selling it.
To make things easier for my fellow sisters, I have decided to share some of the information I have collected.
I contacted Maybelline but they only told me that their products are free of pork. If anyone wishes to know further (such as the products contain alcohol or other animal ingredients), they can easily contact the company online.
I emailed Rimmel’s London company as their products are commonly used and this is what they said:
My family and I personally questioned some imported brands (that is their salesgirls) such as bodyshop, vipera, miyo, and Pierre Reine who reported that they are halal.
We also questioned some known good quality brands such as Junaid Jamshed, Musrrat Misbah and flormar who also gave us the good news that they are halal.
So….my fellow sisters, the question is….why use haram makeup when halal is available?
Besides I can assure you that your makeup will give you better results if it is lawful that is you will look more beautiful if you please Allah by using makeup that is halal.
Come! lets obey Allah, spread awareness and…..increase our beauty.
